You measure your training in minutes of work performed (rather than distance), because you know that what gets measured gets done, and getting uphill work to COUNT, is something that benefits you long-term.
The smartest thing for longevity, is to steer clear of perfectionism, and not to get tempted into being driven or intense. CONSISTENCY is the path to success, while the Driven people are just too all-or-nothing, to make it very far!
With each day of a 12-week training block, you put 60 to 75 minutes of training IN THE BANK, and the cummmulative effect over 90 days, is something that pleases you!
You feel quite simply, that a good athlete is a person who does good training. You don%u2019t have to do GREAT training, just consistent GOOD trainig is the best for long-term gains.
The smartest thing you can do as an athlete, is to train at low intensity levels, for several years, until your body mechanics are smooth and your aerobic capacity is quadrupled.
You know that becoming an athlete is a matter of being a 10,000 hour practitioner, and you feel your potential is worth developing, just as much as anybody else.
You believe that a person has to earn the right to call themselves an athlete, and until you are able to do an effortless continuous jog, you are still an athlete-in-training, which is good too!
When it comes to being an athlete, you wish everyone knew, that every human has the potential to become an athlete, if only we will devote the time to tune our engine, and build our performance.
You notice that your first three-month training block was when you REALLY got the intensity right, of staying at your MAF heart rate, and not trying to force progress or invite injury.
You believe in putting in a good workout in the late morning or early afternoon, because success comes from putting this thing on autopilot, and enjoying your time at the gym.
You have a vision of yourself, five months from now, just having an internal callibration of what pace you need to run, to finish your training run strong, right at or around your MAF heart zone.
The person you have been up until this year, and the person that you are, by next January, are like night and day, because you went from being a non-athlete to an athlete, in your thinking and in your training.
You notice the way you used to believe that some people were given the gift of being runners, as though God Himself bestowed the ability upon them. The truth is, ALL runners train their legs and heart, and so can you now too!
Once you realized that ANYONE can become an athlete, that was when you began putting in your hours, to eventually arrive at a well-conditioned body, that can perform on an endurancce basis.
You realize you turned a corner in your mind, by ALLOWING yourself to complete a three-month base-building phase, before ever committing to any time tests whatsoever. The base-building phase is FUN and you aren%u2019t needing to hurry it along at all.
Your favorite thing is that you are always able to say, Put in your training time TODAY and even the angels can do no better!
You like the way that fitness is cummulative, and how with every three month training block, your engine gets an upgrade, and you are able to perform even better in endurance and performance.
This is fun for you, because you agree to show up at the gym, even on days when you are not going to exert yourself very much. You believe in calling these recovery days, because nobody can keep up the intensity on days they are blah or pooped!
